In total more than 2,500 of these vehicles were built by the LMS and BR for use on unfitted trains that didn't have the continuous brake system. Some passed into departmental use, such as this LMS-built example, finished in olive green with white markings, including the TOPS designation of ZTO. Basic comforts inside for the guard included seating and a solid fuel stove.
