The Avro Lancaster was the RAF's most famous heavy bomber during World War II and entered service in 1942. More than 7,300 machines were built for the Royal Air Force Bomber Command. One of the most important goals of the RAF was the destruction of the dams in the Ruhr area, which supplied important industrial plants with electricity. In order to hit resilient targets such as dams or dams effectively, a dam-bursting rotary bomb, better known as a bouncing bomb, was developed.

A new unit was set up specifically for this attack, the 617th Squadron, under the command of Lieutenant Colonel Guy Gibson. Under the code name Operation Chastise, this attack with 19 Lancaster bombers took place on the night of May 16-17, 1943.
